There is NO DBT in Ottawa! :-(

Posted by Deneb on June 16, 2009, at 11:52:38

Does anyone have any suggestions that could help me? I just found out there is no DBT in Ottawa at all. There used to be ONE program and it was only for inpatients. Then they got rid of the program so now there is no DBT in Ottawa at all.

BirdSong thinks therapy with pdoc is not enough, but what am I supposed to do now? I think therapy with pdoc is the best I can get in Ottawa.

I think there is a real lack of mental health services in Ottawa.

It's OK. I like my pdoc and I am improving slowly with her. Having DBT would be ideal, but I can do without it.

I have Marsha Linehan's skills workbook. I can go through that myself. I also have a book on CBT. I can go through that as well.

I will be OK.

It sucks that there is no DBT in Ottawa though. There must be other patients out there DBT can help. I guess it was a lack of funding that did the program in.

I don't know about Canada, but I had a hard time finding DBT here in a big city in the US. What I found was a social worker who trained in DBT and I work with her individually. She doesn't advertise herself as a DBT person, I just had to make a lot of phone calls to find her. Maybe you can find someone like that in Ottawa?

There's no DBT here either, except for one hospital that uses for those in their hospital only.

Formal DBT takes a lot of organization and supervision. It would require a lot of work between therapists and might take a lot of time that couldn't be reimbursed by insurance.

But I imagine a lot of therapist incorporate ideas that are similar to DBT. My therapist doesn't know DBT at all, but he does a lot of the same things. Mindfulness, distress tolerance, etc.

In the past, trying to work on the modules here hasn't worked all that well. But I'd be game to try. I've got the manual too. We could do it here or in chat at scheduled times. It wouldn't be the same as therapy of course. But the manual contains a lot of very helpful information, and even outside a therapy situation there could be benefit in reading about them and trying to apply them to ourselves. Or better yet, reading about them ourselves and discussing how they may be helpful to us with our therapists.

But the portions that have to do with therapist support and consequences couldn't really be done in self help or peer groups.

Thanks Emmanuel

I have therapy with my pdoc. My pdoc knows about DBT. I'm not sure if she is trained in it, but she said she has heard Marsha Linehan speak.

I've seen her for about 7 years now and she has helped me a lot. I think I will stick with her.

I was hoping of finding some supplementary DBT, but that won't be happening.

Previous DBT sessions on Babble have not really gone anywhere. I think maybe I'll work through the workbook here on Babble an get feedback.

Others can join in too.

Hey Deneb, if you have any questions about a particular skill or module, I'd be happy to tell you what I know and work through it w/you here on Babble.

I am in DBT here in my major city (US) and am lucky that I have insurance that covers it. I am in the once-a-week program, but even so, when I was in three-days-a-week, insurance covered it.

So I've got some knowledge--I still have ways to go, and obviously am no expert, but the DBT I am getting is some of the best around (and believe me, I've sampled some DBT groups/programs that were just crap).

I can attest that it does help. I have successfully gotten through my first panic attack in months with minimal distress (as minimal as a panic attack can be), and without freaking out about it (which reduced its intensity and duration). I do not completely shut down from distress as I used to; I can usually cope and move on with my life.

It is just so fantastic that your therapist is willing to give it a try. How wonderful.

Oh btw, in addition to the DBT workbook, Linehan has some DVDs/tapes about each module. I think you can order it from her site. Or ask your library to order it.

Good luck!
Amelia
